Aug 23, bluetyson added it. To my surprise, the “Dam Busters” raid itself and the great engineering story of Barnes Wallis takes up only a fraction of the book — most of which is the development of high precision bombing dambustrrs, which I had had no idea was part of Squadron’s legacy.
He points out that the family lived in Newtownards for five years, and that Brian Goodale had an important job with a well known local firm. Quite simply one of the most astonishing times in our recent history; one of dambustets greatest inventors Barnes Wallissome of the bravest men Bomber Command.
Going on to hail the squadron’s success in bombing the Tirpitz off the coast of Norway and the V1 and V2 bunkers in France, it paints a detailed picture of the lives of these young laulsome younger than thatand it reads like a thriller. The squadron became known as the “Dam Busters” because of Operation Chastisea mission using dmabusters specialised bombs to destroy Ruhr dams in Germany.
